FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – It was a successful tournament for the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team as Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell competed in the 2014 USTA/ITA Indoor intercollegiate Championships. The tournament began Thursday and took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
After defeating the No. 3 player in the country, Hayley Carter out of UNC, the sophomore star fell in the second round of consolation play to SEC foe Julia Jones in a tight 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 match. The Ole Miss Rebel is currently ranked No. 72 in the ITA preseason rankings.
“It’s all really good learning,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “It’s been a really successful and productive fall. I think both of them learned a lot about what you need to succeed on the big stage, and how close they are to breaking through. We’re going to take a little break and then get back to work. What’s helpful for me is to have a specific thing to refer to from match play. You just say, “Hey remember when this happened?” and you’re not just speaking in general, you’re being really specific with them. I think we’ll have a productive off season after we get some rest.”
The Commodores will take a two-month hiatus from competition. Vandy will return to action on Jan. 16 at the Miami Invitational.
