Women's tennis extends winning streak to eight, sweeps Mississippi State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 19 Vanderbilt women’s tennis notched its second straight SEC shutout with a 7-0 victory over Mississippi State on Friday.

The Dores quickly picked up the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, both of which extended winning streaks. Juniors Sonya Macavei and Bridget Stammel collected their fourth straight doubles win, while sophomore Valeria Ray and freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar generated their sixth. All three of Vandy’s doubles teams are on current streaks, with the No. 12-ranked duo of senior Célia-Belle Mohr and freshman Sophia Webster sitting on a stretch of four.

No. 46 Mohr wasted no time for the Dores in singles, blanking Maria Rizzolo 6-0, 6-0. Stammel followed suite just afterwards with a 6-1, 6-2 result at the No. 3 position. And for the thirteenth consecutive match, No. 94 Ray pulled away with a singles win. Her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Alessia Tagliente marks the longest singles streak in the Aleke Tsoubanos head coaching era. Ray is now just seven wins away from tying the all-time record of 20 consecutive singles victories, set in the 2007-08 season by Courtney Ulery.

Macavei completed a comeback thriller at No. 4 singles, downing Jayna Clemens 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) after multiple extended rallies. Vijayakumar and Webster sealed the Vanderbilt sweep at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. The 7-0 result is the first time the Dores have captured back-to-back shutout SEC wins since April 5 and April 7, 2018; Vandy finished as an NCAA finalist later that season.

No. 19 Vanderbilt (9-1, 2-0 SEC) welcomes No. 17 Alabama (8-2, 2-0 SEC) for a Sunday battle set at 1 p.m. For other information, updates and exclusive game day content, follow the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team, @VandyWTennis, on Instagram and X.
