COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second time in as many weeks the No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores fell to the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes, this time by a score of 4-2.
Vanderbilt got off to a rocky start against the Buckeyes who sealed the doubles point over the squad with wins at one (6-3) and three (6-4) doubles. Astra Sharma and Ellie Yates were up 5-4 when the match retired.
Lacking the crucial doubles point, the Commodores would have to come out of fire to win first sets, but OSU used their momentum coming off of doubles to go 4-2 in first sets.
Vandy’s Frances Altick and Courtney Colton both pulled out their first sets with an east 3-6 victory.
Altick continued to cruise on court three, defeating OSU’s De Santis. 6-3, 6-3 to put the Commodore squad on the board. The victory was the senior’s 90th win for the squad, now boasting a 90-31 singles record.
At that point VU was down 3-0 with the Buckeyes searching for their fourth and final point.
While the Aussie dropped her first set 6-3, Sharma rallied back to take her match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to cut the Buckeye lead 3-2.
For the second competition in a row against OSU, the match ultimately came down to Colton who came back and forced a third set tiebreaker. With Sydney Campbell up 4-3 in the third set against the top player in the country, Colton fought hard to keep the match alive, but fell in a third set tiebreaker; 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
Vanderbilt has a quick turnaround, as the squad takes on the Northwestern Wildcats Sunday at 11:00 am.
