NASHVILLE, Tenn. â€â€ÂVanderbilt baseball hits the road for a pair of midweek contests against Austin Peay and Louisville on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Commodores (23-16, 7-10 SEC) will face the Governors at 6 p.m. in Clarksville on Tuesday, before heading north to face the Cardinals at 5 p.m. CT in Louisville on Wednesday.
The two contests are the final two midweek games on the schedule as of Monday, but that could be changed as VU is looking to add another game(s) in a few weeks.
Austin Peay is 16-22 overall and 3-7 in Ohio Valley play after splitting a pair of contests against Tennessee Tech at home over the weekend. The third game of the series was canceled due to rain on Sunday.
AP Third baseman Greg Bachman leads the team with a .353 batting average along with five homers and 28 RBI. He has an 11-game hit streak entering Tuesday night’s contest. First baseman Matt Kole is the top power source with eight homers and 32 RBI to go with a .304 batting average. As a team, the Govs are hitting .277 with 25 homers and 226 runs scored (5.9 per game). Southpaw Jeremy Dobbs (2-2, 5.84 ERA) will get the start against the Commodores. He has 25 walks and 18 walks in 24.2 innings on the year with five starts in 11 appearances. As a team, AP sports a 5.84 ERA with 270 strikeouts and 170 walks in 323.2 innings.
VU holds a 50-18-2 all-time lead in a series that dates back to 1958. The Commodores have won the last 12 meetings dating back to the 2002 season, including a 10-5 win in Nashville on March 24. Austin Peay’s head coach Gary McClure is the father of current Vanderbilt sophomore utility man Alex McClure. Sophomore left-hander Sean Bierman (2-1, 4.23) will start against the Governors on Tuesday.
Louisville is 27-10 overall and 11-4 in the Big East after sweeping Rutgers in a three-game series in New Jersey over the weekend.
The Cardinals are led offensively by left fielder Ryan Wright who is hitting at a .338 clip with two homers and 37 RBI. Third baseman Chris Dominguez, a preseason All-American, leads the team with nine homers and 47 RBI to go with a .329 batting average. Louisville is hitting .296 as a team with 38 homers and 295 runs scored in 37 games (7.8 per contest).
The Cardinals pitching staff has a combined 3.94 ERA with 322 strikeouts and 115 walks in 344.2 innings pitched. Wednesday’s starter had yet to be announced as of Monday afternoon.
Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 12-2 dating back to the 1971 season. The Commodores won 17-6 last season in Nashville. Sophomore right-hander Taylor Hill (1-1, 4.50) will start against the Cardinals on Wednesday.
