Nashville, Tenn. – Former St. John’s pitching coach Scott Brown has been named to the same position at Vanderbilt by Commodores’ Head Coach Tim Corbin.
Brown joins the Dores after nine seasons with the Red Storm, where he helped lead St. John’s to seven NCAA Tournaments and five Big East championships. The Red Storm played in the school’s first-ever Super Regional last season losing to eventual national champion Arizona. His pitchers posted one of the top two ERAs in the Big East for five consecutive seasons (2004-08) with the team’s ERA ranking in the top 10 nationally from 2006-08. He has coached three All-Americans, four major league pitchers and had 15 pitchers sign professional contracts.
“Being from the northeast, Scott is someone that I have followed for quite some time,” Corbin said. “When you ask about young pitching coaches that have made a difference, Scott’s name is widely mentioned…he is one of the most respected young coaches in our profession. He has worked under a leader that I admire a great deal in Eddie Blankmeyer and has helped St. John’s gain tremendous momentum on the national baseball scene. His personality, communication skills with young people and recruiting energy will fit the University and our baseball program. Similar to our coaches here, he comes from humble beginnings and understands that successful teaching lies in what you do and not what you have. Prior to joining the Red Storm, Brown coached at Division III State University of New York at Cortland, his alma mater, for four seasons. At SUNY-Cortland, Brown helped lead the Red Dragons to a 35-11 record capturing the team’s seventh straight league title and 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. His 2003 pitching staff struck out a school record 333 batters and posted the ninth-best ERA in the nation.
Brown has coached in two collegiate summer leagues beginning in 2000 with the Cortland Apples of the New York Collegiate Baseball League and led the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League from 2002-04. The Mainers won the 2004 NECBL league title and Brown was named the Manager of the Year.
Brown pitched at SUNY-Cortland for three seasons compiling 19 victories and earning an All-American nod in 1999 after going 9-1 with a 2.03 ERA.
The hire completes Corbin’s staff with Brown joining new hitting coach Travis Jewett, who joined the Commodores in August. Brown replaces long time pitching coach Derek Johnson after Johnson left to join the Chicago Cubs organization as the club’s Minor League Pitching Coordinator. Former Commodore Drew Fann has also joined the staff as the team’s Director of Baseball Operations. Fann completed his eligibility last season after five seasons with the Dores.
Vanderbilt begins the 2013 season at home with a three-game series against Long Beach State on February 15. The team’s annual Baseball Banquet is scheduled for February 9 inside the Student Life Center at 6:30 p.m. For ticket information click here or call 615.322.GOLD.
