Bowlers Earn Title Bracket in Delaware

Nov. 17, 2012

MILLSBORO, DE—Vanderbilt’s bowlers had a strong and steady day at the Hawk Classic and as a result, gained ground and climbed into third place in the 19-team field.

The Commodores cracked the 1,000-pin barrier in each of their five games, highlighted by a pair of games over 1,100 and trail only host Maryland-Eastern Shore and Central Missouri, which is coming off a win at last week’s Crusader Classic.

Vanderbilt started strong against Valparaiso, led by Jessica Earnest (258) and freshman Tori Ferris (254) and was able to stay consistent the entire day. Only a hiccup against Adelphi in the third game prevented a clean sweep of the opposition.

Vanderbilt’s powerful freshman class shined with Amanda Fry averaging 220, Robyn Renslow a pin behind at 219 and Tori Ferris adding a 258 and 206. Veteran All-American Jessica Earnest also had a stellar day, averaging 218.

“I was pretty pleased with today,” Coach John Williamson said. “We have had some erratic moments of late but we talked about trying to maintain our focus the entire day and we talked about playing for something bigger than ourselves. We would have liked to get a few frames back in that Adelphi game but otherwise we did a nice job.

“I thought Amanda and Robyn were very good and Jess can always be counted upon,” Williamson said. “We didn’t quite click on all cylinders but it was as close as we’ve come this fall to doing so. When you have the youth and experience we have right now there are going to be some inconsistency. If you stop and think about it, Jessica is really our only experienced player.”

Fry, Renslow and Earnest placed fifth, sixth and seventh respectively in the singles standings. Central Missouri star Natalie Jiminez ran away with first place with a booming 247 average over the five games.

Vanderbilt will face Fairleigh Dickinson while Maryland-Eastern Shore plays Central Missouri the tomorrow’s first round of the title bracket.
