Bold NIL Matching Challenge Builds Men’s Basketball Momentum

Alumnus Mark H. Carter’s $1.5 million gift and matching challenge unites supporters around Anchor Impact’s NIL efforts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt today announced a $1.5 million matching gift from Mark H. Carter to support Vanderbilt men’s basketball NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) initiatives and inspire Commodore Nation to action. Carter will match all gifts and pledges, up to $1.5 million, to support Anchor Impact’s men’s basketball NIL efforts.

Anchor Impact is the official collective of Vanderbilt Athletics.

“We’re grateful to Mark Carter for seizing the momentum of this men’s basketball season as it continues into March,” said Candice Storey Lee, vice chancellor for athletics and university affairs and athletic director. “The NIL space is of paramount importance in collegiate athletics. Through Anchor Impact, it also represents an opportunity for differentiation for Vanderbilt Athletics, where collaborative support is part of our university DNA. Mark’s matching gift is a wonderful way for Commodore Nation to get involved with Anchor Impact for the first time or double down on their commitment.”

Carter’s most recent gift follows soon after the alumnus endowed the program’s head coaching position, allowing Mark Byington to serve as the first Mark H. Carter and Family Men’s Basketball Head Coach. Carter hopes the new matching challenge supercharges enthusiasm stoked by Byington’s first season and positions the program to continue moving forward by retaining and recruiting the best of the best when the transfer portal opens March 24.

The Commodores are projected to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017 and have already defeated four top-15 opponents for the first time since 1987-88.

“I’m a firm believer that collegiate sports are an unmatched opportunity to bring people together and enhance a university’s profile,” Carter said. “When Vanderbilt wins, it strengthens our connection to the university and each other, as alumni and supporters. And if we, in turn, invest in recruiting and holding onto the best of the best, we can do great things for the university. When the whole world is watching Vanderbilt, the return on investment is exponential. I hope this challenge encourages everyone to get involved in making Vanderbilt the standard in NIL.”

Supporters can take up the challenge and have their gifts matched by visiting the giving page.

“I’m grateful for and blown away by Mark Carter’s passion and generosity toward Vanderbilt men’s basketball,” Byington said. “While our team is focused on extending our time together this season for as long as possible, we also remain committed to retaining talented student-athletes as well as bringing future commodores that can help us be a top program in the country. Mark and everyone who takes up the challenge will help us build on our first season and will keep pushing to make Vanderbilt proud.”
