No. 11 Vanderbilt visits Kentucky for Sunday matinee match in Lexington

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 11 Vanderbilt women’s tennis eyes a seventh win in its last eight matches as the Commodores travel to Lexington for a Sunday match against Kentucky at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.

The black and gold are coming off a comeback 4-3 victory over No. 12 Tennessee in Knoxville. Vanderbilt (17-5, 7-3 SEC) owns three ranked SEC wins this season, all of which have come against top-15 opponents. Sophomore Sophia Webster holds the longest singles streak on the team after picking up her fifth in a row to deliver the clinch point against the Volunteers. Webster is now 19-4 overall in singles play. The No. 25 ranked duo of junior Valeria Ray and senior Bridget Stammel produced their fourth ranked win together on Friday at the top doubles position for the Commodores. Vandy owns 14 total ranked doubles victories this season.

Kentucky (9-10, 1-9 SEC) enters Sunday’s matchup after collecting its first SEC win of the season, a 4-0 defeat of Missouri on Friday. The Wildcats trail the Dores 37-20 in the all-time series; Vanderbilt has taken eight in a row between the two dating back to 2017. The black and gold netted a 5-2 victory over Kentucky last season in Nashville.

Zoe Hammond competes at Kentucky’s No. 1 position, sitting at a 9-6 record this season. She recently dismantled No. 1 Carmen Herea of Texas, 6-3, 6-3, on March 20. Freshman Mia Yamakita matched up with Hammond in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship singles quarterfinals, downing the Wildcat 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. A day after Yamakita’s win, Stammel also defeated a Kentucky opponent in the regional tournament, blanking Julia Zhu 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinal round. In doubles, the Wildcats are led by Asuncion Jadue and Reese Sager, who have produced six total victories while playing primarily at the No. 1 or No. 2 position.
