Black Team Defeats Gold, 6-3, in First of Three Game Series 10-10-03

Nashville, Tenn.

– Freshman Aaron Garza (6-0, 179, OF, Austin, Texas) scored two runs and collected three hits to help lead the Black Team to a 6-3 win over the Gold Team in the first of a three-game series between the two squads Friday night in Hawkins Stadium. The series resumes Sunday (Oct. 12) at 1 pm and concludes Monday (Oct. 13) at 6 pm.

Jeremy Sowers (6-1, 175, Jr., P, Louisivlle, Ky.) picked up the win pitching three innings and giving up four hits, two runs (earned) and striking out two. Ryan Rote (6-3, 216, Jr./Tr., P, Delafield, Wis.) collected the save striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning. Michael Wagner (6-1, 169, Fr., Woodinville, Wash.) picked up the loss allowing six hits and three runs, all earned, in three innings of play.

Garza began the game with a double off the left field wall on the first pitch of the game off Jeff Sues (6-4, 220, So./RS, P, Red Bank, NJ). He then stole third and scored when Warner Jones (5-10, 160, So., 3B, Nashville, Tenn.) grounded out to second.

“I really liked the way Aaron (Garza) played tonight,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said. “He played very aggressive.”

“I also think Kleinschrodt (Bill), Mansolino (Tony) and Zeller (Matt) had some good at bats.”

“Offensively you can see that we are better than last year. We showed the ability to take advantage of the pitchesrs’ mistakes.”

The Gold Team answered with two runs in the bottom of the second when Tony Mansolino (6-0, 200, Jr., 3B, Collierville, Tenn.) scored on a Matt McGraner (6-2, 205, So., C/DH, Germantown, Tenn.) sacrifice fly to right field. Matt Zeller (6-3, 175, So., RF, Leawood, Kan.) then scored on a single from Will Becker (6-1, 200, Fr./RS, DH/C, Hudson, Ohio) after reaching base on a double to left center field.

The Black Team scored three runs in the top of the third inning off the Gold Team Pitcher Wagner. Garza singled to third, followed by another single from Stephen Shao (5-11, 172, Fr., DH/P, Hermitage, Tenn.). Bill Kleinschrodt (6-3, 205, Fr., OF, Mobile, Ala.) doubled to left field scoring Garza and advancing Shao to third. Worth Scott (6-0, 200, Sr., CF, Hendersonville, Tenn.) singled up the middle scoring Shao and Kleinschrodt.

The Gold Team got within one run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mansolina doubled down the right field line off Jensen Lewis (6-3, 185, So., P, Cincinnati, Ohio) and then scored when Zeller collected a double up the middle.

The Black Team scored its final two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Zach Simpson (6-0, 185, Jr., 1B, Fayetteville, Ark.) began the inning with a single off Cody Crowell (6-2, 183, Fr., P, Harwichport, Mass.). Simpson advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Carter Hawkins (6-2, 181, Fr., C, Atlanta, Ga.) and stole third. Greg Del George (5-11, 159, Fr., 2B, Staten Island, NY) grounded out to first base scoring Simpson with Taylor advancing to second after drawing a base on balls. Garza then reached on an error by Mansolino enabling Taylor to score the unearned run.

In the last three innings, the Black team left four men on base, while the Gold team left three men on base.

The Black Team used four pitchers in the game including Sowers, Lewis, Shao and Rote. The Gold Team used five pitchers in the game including Sues, Wagner, Crowell, Tyler Rhoden (6-1, 201, Fr., Macclenny, Fla.) and Nick Pilkington (6-4, 185, So., Brighton, Tenn.)
