The Black team scratched out a run in the fifth inning to even the series with the Gold team with a 4-3 win in seven innings on a chilly Friday night at Hawkins Field.

Tony Kemp worked a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth, which proved to be trouble for Gold pitcher Carson Fulmer. Kemp stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Dansby Swanson. With the infield playing in Mike Yastrzemski cashed in on the opportunity, smashing a ground ball down the first base line that first baseman Zander Wiel dove to stop allowing Kemp to score the eventual winning run from third.

Keenan Kolinsky and Tyler Ferguson combined to get the final six outs and even the series. Ferguson notched the save, freezing fellow freshman Xavier Turner with a breaking ball to end the game with the tying run on third base. Kolinsky earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of work. Both starting pitchers turned in solid outings with Black team starter Tyler Beede striking out seven batters over 4.1 innings. The right-hander allowed three runs on three hits with six walks in a no decision. Fulmer tossed 4.2 innings giving up four runs on five hits.

Freshman shortstop Dansby Swanson went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Black team. The Georgia-native tripled in a run in the first and knocked in a run with two outs with a single in the second inning. Fellow freshman Tyler Campbell again proved to be a catalyst for the Gold squad knocking in two runs with a two-run single in the third.

The Commodores will wrap up the Black & Gold series Sunday afternoon with a seven-inning scrimmage. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
