Bertrand to Finals for VU; ASU Has Six Finalists

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Nashville — Sophomore Taka Bertrand (Great Falls, Va.) advanced to the finals in the Marshall Summar Singles Draw at the June Stewart Invitational at the BrownleeO.CurreyTennisCenter. Bertrand defeated SEC opponent Virginia Tomatis 6-3, 6-0 to move onto the final round where she will face Kady Pooler of ArizonaState, who for the second time in as many days won in a third-set tiebreaker.

ArizonaState as a team has been impressive throughout the tournament. The Sun Devils are 8-1 in doubles play and are 13-2 in singles play with six players reaching their flight finals.

The rest of the Commodores did not do as well, with sophomore Caroline Ferrell (Blythewood, S.C.) and freshmen Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Liberte Sveke (Sarasota, Fla.) each lost in straight sets. Freshman Courtney Ulery (Wellington, Fla.), moved into the finals of the consolation bracket in the Summars Draw when her opponent, Beatrice Grasu of Richmond retired. Ulery had been leading 5-4 in the first set. Ulery will face wither ASU’s Sabrina Capannola or Pamela Duran of UR.
