HOOVER, Ala. – No. 1 Vanderbilt received a dominant pitching performance from Tyler Beede en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Texas A&M Aggies Friday night in the SEC Tournament at the Hoover Met.
The Commodores (50-8) will play Mississippi State Saturday afternoon at approximately 3 p.m. CT for a spot in the championship game. The 50 wins mark the third time in school history to reach the 50-win plateau. Vanderbilt avenged a 5-0 loss to the Aggies (32-27) just two days ago in the second round of the tournament. Texas A&M is the third opponent to be shut out by the Commodores this season.
Looking to strike early in the second inning, Vanderbilt loaded the bases with no outs, but left them loaded after a lineout by Vince Conde and an inning-ending double play by Spencer Navin. An inning later, Xavier Turner drove in Tony Kemp with an RBI-double to give Vanderbilt a 1-0 lead. After a bunt single from Mike Yastrzemski, Connor Harrell gave the Dores a 2-0 advantage on a sacrifice fly.
The sacrifice fly from Harrell knocked Texas A&M starting pitcher Grayson Long (4-2) out of the game after just 2.1 innings. Long gave up two runs on seven hits with one strikeout.
In the top of the fifth, Rhett Wiseman singled up the middle scoring Harrell to make it 3-0 in favor of the Commodores. The run proved to be the last one of the game.
Beede (14-0) cruised through 7.1 innings, while only allowing only two hits and striking out eight batters. The Auburn, Mass., native now owns the school record for wins in a single season with 14. The 7.1 innings matches his career-high, which he set earlier this season vs. Tennessee. Brian Miller came in to throw the final 1.2 innings to earn his 15th save of the season and 20th of his career. His 20 career saves are a new school record passing Ryan Rote’s total of 19 career saves.
As a team, Vanderbilt pounded out 14 hits on the evening, after producing just 12 combined in the first two games of the tournament. Kemp extended his hitting streak to 11 games after going 3-for-5 at the plate. Kemp also notched two stolen bases to give him 29 on the season.
Kemp, Turner, Yastrzemski, Wiseman, Conrad Gregor and Zander Wiel each registered multi-hit games for VU. Harrell recorded his team-leading 62nd RBI of the season.
Texas A&M was shut out for the first time since the season-opener versus Illinois-Chicago and held to a season-low two hits. Chance Bolcerek and Troy Stein were the only two Aggies to record hits in the loss.
