The two favorite words to a sports marketer: Sold Out

Two words that cause many perception problems: Sold Out

It is true that entertainment operations from the Chicago Cubs to the Nashville Symphony long to hang the “Sold Out” sign in the box office window. It symbolizes public support, revenue and most often all other positive things.

However, “sold out” does not always equate to “locked out” and that is the case with Commodore baseball in 2008.

Q Didn’t I hear that Vanderbilt baseball was sold out on a season basis before the year?

A Yes you did, that’s a fact. All 2,000-plus seats in the inner Hawkins Field bowl are sold on a season basis.

Q What impact did adding the 1000 bleacher seats in right field have?

A We moved a block of Vanderbilt students, some visiting fans and sold mid-season packages in these seats. Not all of these seats were sold for the season.

Q Didn’t I notice that the bleachers are not always full?

A Yes. If we determine that the inner bowl seats will not be full, we allow fans to move inside to vacant chairs.

Q But aren’t those seats sold out?

A Most teams experience a “no show” factor due to the many games of a home season. We play games on Tuesday and Wednesday’s and host SEC opponents on Friday nights and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Some season ticket holders just can’t attend all the games, thus their seats could be empty. Questionable weather also keeps some fans away. And spring semester is over by our Georgia series, opening up a few more seats.

Q Does that mean I could attend a game and get inside the Hawkins bowl?

A Probably. Every home game we offer about 900 individual tickets, which includes the right field bleachers and general admission that take into consideration our no-shows and some patio standing room.

Q If I have a youth group or sandlot team, is it too late to attend?

A No! We would have been able to accommodate any reasonably sized group at any game this season. To check into group availability, call 615-343-8005.

Q Can I buy a ticket days in advance of a game?

A Yes. Call the ticket office at 615-322-GOLD or go on-line at vucommodores.com. Your tickets will likely be in right field.

Q How many games are left this season?

A Just seven: a pair of three-game stands against Kentucky (this weekend!) and Georgia (May 9-11) – both quality teams – and one Wednesday game with Tennessee Tech on May 7.
