Baseball stymies Ohio 5-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jack Armstrong, Chase Reid and Corey Williams combined to allow just one run on five hits in Vanderbilt’s 5-1 win over Ohio Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores swept the three game series to improve 14-1 overall and extended their winning streak to 10 games. The Bobcats fell to 2-11 on the season.

Armstrong (2-0) allowed one run on four hits in 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and three walks to pick up his first win since his start in the season opening series against Niagara.

Reid faced one batter in the seventh and got him to fly out on the first pitch and Corey Williams closed things out with two innings of one-hit scoreless relief.

“It was great for us to get the win,” said Armstrong. “I had one goal in mind and that was to create as many groundball outs I could and then get as long into the game as I could. It was fun, had a couple of quick innings and one-pitch outs.”

VU got on the board in the first when Bryan Johns singled, stole second and scored on a RBI single by Riley Reynolds.

OU tied the game in the second on a solo homer by Robert Maddox III, his first of the year.

The Dores took the lead in the fourth when Andrew Giobbi singled, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single by Joe Loftus.

Connor Harrell’s solo homer in the sixth inning extended the lead to 3-1. It was his first collegiate homer.

Vanderbilt added two more runs in the seventh on Giobbi’s single up the middle with the bases loaded. Aaron Westlake walked, Jason Esposito singled and Riley Reynolds reached on a bunt single to set up Giobbi’s hit.

Jason Esposito, Riley Reynolds and Andrew Giobbi each had two hits to lead VU and every person in the lineup recorded a hit in the game.

The Commodores will close out their nine-game home stand against Western Kentucky on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field. VU will then hit the road for four games, starting with a Wednesday contest against the Hilltoppers at 3 p.m. The Dores will open Southeastern Conference play next weekend at Alabama.
