NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Iowa pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of four Vanderbilt errors in a 6-3 win Saturday evening at Hawkins Field.
Iowa (3-2) scored three runs in the second and a run in the third to take an early 4-0 lead over the Commodores. Wes Freie’s RBI single in the first capped off a stretch of three straight singles to open the scoring. Justin Toole had a fielder’s choice RBI and Caleb Curry added a RBI single in the inning.
The Hawkeyes added another run in the third for the fourth run.
The Commodores (4-2) rallied for two runs with two outs in the bottom half to cut the lead to 4-2. Dominic de la Osa had an infield single and scored on a RBI double by Ryan Flaherty. Andrew Giobbi added a RBI single to score Flaherty for the second run.
Steven Liddle led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan White to slice the deficit to 4-3.
Iowa knocked VU starter Brett Jacobson out of the game in the fifth, scoring two more runs to make it 6-3. The first run came on a suicide squeeze bunt RBI by Kyle Riffel. He reached on a fielding error by Jacobson and later scored on an infield RBI single by Justin Brauer for the second run in the inning.
Jacobson (0-2) gave up six runs, four earned on 10 hits in 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and a walk.
Freshman Chase Reid came on in relief in the fifth and did not allow a run in 3.2 innings, with three strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore righthander Drew Hayes came on in the ninth and got himself out of a bases loaded jam with one out by striking out Justin Brauer and getting Kevin Hoef to fly out to center.
“I just want to go out there an try my hardest and it’s been going well so far,” said Reid. “We will come out tomorrow and play hard and try and get the bats going again and good pitching and defense wins games.”
Every Vanderbilt hitter recorded a hit, but the team could never sustain momentum, stranding 11 runners on base.
The Commodores will close out the Music City Classic against Xavier Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Muskeeters (1-4) lost to Kansas in the first game Saturday, 12-4.
