NASHVILLE, Tenn. –No. 5 Vanderbilt will open a stretch of five baseball games in six days Tuesday against No. 21 Louisville at 4 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores (5-2) went 2-1 at the Music City Classic over the weekend and remained No. 5 in Rivals.com weekly rankings. Sophomore first baseman Andrew Giobbi led the Commodores last week offensively, going 8-for-17 (.471) with three doubles and seven RBI in four games.
Redshirt freshman Caleb Cotham (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will get his second straight midweek start after holding Evansville scoreless in four innings of work. The Mt. Juliet native allowed five hits while striking out three and walking two in the no decision.
The Cardinals (4-2), No. 21 in Rivals.com poll, went 2-1 at the Charleston Firefighter Memorial last week in Charleston, S.C. They picked up wins over North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T while losing to The Citadel, 1-0 in 10 innings on Saturday.
UL went to the College World Series last season under then first year head coach Dan McDonnell who earned National Coach of the Year honors. Catcher/designated hitter Jeff Arnold leads the team with a .438 batting average, while Justin McClanahan is the top power source with three homers and six RBI.
Senior righthander James Belanger is slated to get the start for Louisville. He has pitched a scoreless inning on the year with a strikeout. Last season he was 1-4 with a 3.94 ERA and had 29 strikeouts and 28 walks in 59.1 innings.
Cardinal infielder Greg Del George spent his first two seasons at Vanderbilt before transferring to Louisville last year. He has made three starts in five games this year and is 0-for-8 at the plate.
Vanderbilt holds an 11-2 all-time series lead and won the last time the two teams met, 6-5, in 2002.
