| Baseball Drops Game One of Doubleheader

ALABAMA DEFEATS VANDERBILT 9-3 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Wade LeBlanc threw eight innings of four-hit shutout baseball to lead Alabama to a 9-3 win over Vanderbilt in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Crimson Tide improved to 29-12 overall and 11-5 in SEC play, while the Commodores fell to 25-14 and 10-6 in conference action. LeBlanc moved to 7-0 on the year after walking four with three strikeouts in eight innings of work. Alabama took a 1-0 lead in the first when Emeel Salem led off with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a RBI single by Alex Avila. The Crimson Tide extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth on a three-run homer by leftfielder Brandon Belcher. UA put the game away with a three-run fifth to make it 7-0. Kody Valverde had a RBI double, Evan Bush had a sacrifice fly RBI and Ryan Rhoden a RBI single to account for the scoring. Matt Downs hit a solo homer, his fourth of the year, in the seventh to extend it to 8-0. Greg Paiml’s RBI single in the eighth closed out the Tide scoring in the game. Jonathan White pinch hit in the ninth and hit a two-run homer to right to make it 9-2. It was his first career hit in his first career SEC appearance. After pinch hitter Kurt Lipton walked and stole second, Pedro Alvarez delivered a RBI double to left center to make the final score 9-3. David Price gave up a career high eight runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work to fall to 5-3 on the year. It was his first loss since a March 3 decision to Ball State, a span of seven appearances.
