NASHVILLE , Tenn. — Redshirt freshman Jordan Wormsley sparked a three-run seventh inning with a RBI single that broke a 6-6 tie and propelled Vanderbilt to a 10-7 win over Belmont Wednesday night at Greer Stadium.
The Commodores have now won 12 of their last 13 to improve to 30-11 on the season, while the Bruins fell to 15-26.
Wormsley, a redshirt freshman from Knoxville, Tenn., came into the game with three hits in seven at-bats at Vanderbilt and equaled that total with three hits and two RBI on the night.
VU took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth, only to see Belmont come back and tie the game in the bottom half. Shea Robin then led off the seventh with a double and Wormsley scored him with a single through the right side to give the Dores a 7-6 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Ryan Flaherty added a two-out two-run double to extend the lead to 9-6.
Wormsley added a RBI single in the eighth to extend the lead to 10-6. Belmont scored a run in the bottom half on a RBI double by Derek Wiley for the final score of the game.
“Jordan is just a gamer,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “He has had good at-bats before this season and always puts the ball in play and hits it hard.”
Belmont took a 1-0 led in the first on Daniel Wagner’s RBI double to left-center. The Bruins added two unearned runs in the second on a two-run double to right-center by Brandon McCall to make it 3-0.
The Commodores got on the board in the third scoring on a David Macias RBI single. They added another run in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Bruins plated another run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double by Vinny Casha to make it 4-2.
Andrew Giobbi put the Commodores up for the first time in the game with two outs in the sixth, belting a 1-2 pitch by Brian Kelley over the wall in left for a grand-slam homer. It was his second homer of the season and scored Pedro Alvarez who doubled and Ryan Flaherty and Dominic de la Osa who both walked with two outs.
“Andrew’s hit was huge,” said Corbin. “A two-strike, two-out grand-slam homer that gave us our first lead of the game. I knew from there we would be able to keep the lead from there.”
The Bruins rallied back to tie the game in the bottom half, scoring two unearned runs in the sixth to make it 6-6.
Steven Liddle had three hits to help lead the 12-hit Vanderbilt attack.
The Commodores will be back at Hawkins Field this weekend to face Kentucky (31-10) in a three-game Southeastern Conference series. The teams will open play on Friday at 6 p.m., with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
