Barczi Walks Off Bisons

Vanderbilt beats Lipscomb 5-4 in 10 innings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt walked off Lipscomb with a 5-4 win as Colin Barczi singled home the game-winning run in the 10th inning Tuesday night at Hawkins Field.

It’s Vandy’s second walk-off win in as many weeks as the Dores knocked off WKU in 10 innings on April 1.

Austin Nye got the start on the mound and held Lipscomb to two runs on six hits over 5.0 innings while striking out six. Tommy O’Rourke earned the win with two innings of work, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

The Commodores pushed a pair of runs across in the top of the first to build a 2-0 lead. Jonathan Vastine earned a leadoff walk and came around to score on a Brodie Johnston sac fly for the run’s first game.

With RJ Austin on third and Riley Nelson on first, Nelson stole second and Austin took off for home as the throw went to second with Austin beating the throw back home on the double steal.

Lipscomb pulled even with a two-run top of the second, scoring runs on a single and a sac bunt.

The Dores retook the lead in a big way with Braden Holcomb launching a two-run home run in the bottom the fourth. Holcomb has now homered in consecutive games after leaving the park at Oklahoma on Sunday.

The Bisons manufactured a run in the top of the seventh, scoring on an infield single to trail Vandy by one at 4-3.

A wild pitch with two outs in the ninth allowed the tying run to score for Lipscomb, sending the game to extras.

Vastine and Austin both reached on errors to start off the bottom of the 10th. Barczi, who entered the game on defense in the top of the inning, lined the game-winning single with two outs past a diving second baseman into right field as Vastine scored from second to win it for the Commodores.

The Commodores improve to 27-10 on the season and 19-3 at home. Vandy hosts Georgia for a three-game series at Hawkins Field beginning Thursday.
