Babel Named Women’s Tennis Assistant Coach

Meike Babel, a former world class player, has been named assistant coach for Vanderbilt women’s tennis by Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. Babel, 28, comes to Nashville after coaching for two years at Tulane.

A 10-year veteran of the WTA Tour, she reached a career high ranking of No. 27 in the world in singles and 45 in doubles.  Babel competed in all four Grand Slam events for several years and represented her native country, Germany, in Federation Cup competition.

“I came to Vanderbilt because everything is here for a young student-athlete to reach her potential — a great education, a winning environment and world class training, coaching and competition.”

Head Coach Geoff Macdonald described hiring Babel as a “coup” for the Vanderbilt program.

“In addition to her phenomenal career as a player, Meike is developing a stellar reputation in coaching.  She knows the game so well and her experience at the highest levels of tennis can significantly help our team.”

Babel is joining a program that has played for national championships in two of the last three years.  She replaces David Thornton, who will coach privately in the area.
