Augenstein Wins First Match at U.S. Amateur

Rising senior moves on to the round of 32 for the second consecutive year

PINEHURST, N.C. – Rising senior John Augenstein won six of his last eight holes, and four consecutive holes to end the match, to move on to the round of 32 for the second consecutive year after defeating Ryan Smith, 6 & 4, in the opening round of match play of the U.S. Amateur at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.

Augenstein never trailed in his match on Wednesday and reeled off wins on holes 11, 12, 13, and 14 to quickly end his match with Smith, who hails from Carlsbad, California.

The senior from Owensboro, Kentucky will take on Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, North Carolina on Wednesday in his round of 32 match at 8:30 a.m. Central time. The winner advances to the round of 16 later in the afternoon.
