In front of Great Britain’s top players, 2017 Vanderbilt women’s tennis signee Emily Appleton earned the prestigious Aegon Junior Women’s Player of the Year at the annual Aegon British Tennis Awards ceremony.
Hosted at Wimbledon, the incoming Commodore joined Andy Murray, Johanna Konta and Jay Clarke as the Aegon British Tennis Players of the Year. Winners were selected by the LTA’s Performance Team panel, which recognized exemplary performances during the calendar year 2016.
A native of Chertsey, Appleton began playing tennis at the age of three and is currently the 12th ranked junior tennis player in the world. She has risen as high as 695th amongst ranked women on the pro circuit.
This season Appleton has competed in all four junior grand slams and claimed the title at the Copa Del Café Coffee Bowl in San Jose, Costa Rica. The rising Vanderbilt freshman is currently competing in Junior Wimbledon as the eighth overall seed. Appleton walked away with a first-round victory on Saturday against Japan’s Ayumi Miyamoto in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Appleton looks to continue play on Tuesday around 5 am CT, when she is set to face Russia’s Sofya Lansere.
