Alvarez named to HR Derby

Former Commodore and Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman Pedro Alvarez has been added to the National League’s roster for Monday night’s Home Run Derby.

Alvarez replaces Colorado’s Carlos Gonzalez, who withdrew with a sprained finger suffered earlier in the week, in Monday night’s slugfest after originally being left off the NL’s four-man squad that includes New York Mets’ third baseman and host David Wright, Washington’s Bryce Harper and Colorado’s Michael Cuddyer.

For Alvarez, his first career All-Star nod and Home Run Derby invitation will be extra special with the Bronx native getting to shine in his hometown.

The Vanderbilt legend has already produced a career year, entering the weekend series vs. the Mets hitting .253 with 23 home runs and 60 RBI for the second place Pirates.

Monday night’s Home Run Derby will be broadcast on ESPN beginning at 7 p.m. CT.
