Alvarez and David Price pick up All-SEC honors as well BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt third baseman Pedro Alvarez was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year by the league coaches as the SEC released its yearly honors today. Alvarez hit a school freshman record 17 homers this season with 17 doubles and 55 RBI to go along with a .330 batting average. He was also a first-team All-SEC pick at third. He led all third baseman in the conference in homers, RBI, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and runs scored. The Bronx, N.Y., product also was selected to the SEC All-Freshmen team. Sophomore lefthander David Price was a second-team All-SEC pick after going 8-4 on the season with a 3.99 ERA. He was a three-time National Pitcher of the Week winner and a four-time SEC Pitcher of the Week honoree. Price racked up a school single season record 139 strikeouts in 97.0 innings pitched this year and is 7-2 in conference games. Both players have also been invited to the USA National Team Trials to be held at the end of June. “David and Pedro played huge roles in our team’s success this year and I am happy that they are getting recognized for their hard work,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. |
