GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team had another successful day at the Furman Fall Classic, resulting in two student-athletes playing in tomorrow singles championship.
After going undefeated Saturday afternoon in flight one action, seniors Courtney Colton and Frances Altick square off tomorrow at 7:30 am CT for a `Dore vs. `Dore singles championship.
However, getting to flight finals was no easy feat as No. 49 Altick defeated two SEC foes in tiebreakers to advance. In her first match of the day the Monroe, La. native defeated Bogart out of in-state rival Tennessee, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8). In competition stacked with experienced players from some of the best programs in the Southeast, Altick battled against Alabama’s No. 21 Erin Routliffe in semifinal action, narrowly escaping with a 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (16) ranked victory.
No. 34 Colton had a third set tiebreaker of her own, defeating South Carolina’s Brigit Folland; 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (5). In semis Colton only gave up three games in her easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Furman’s Speaks.
Freshmen Summer Dvorak and Fernanda Contreras both won their matches against two Hawkeyes, and look forward to battling in semifinal action early Sunday morning. Senior Ellie Yates went 0-2 in singles action against two tough opponents out of Clemson and Alabama, while Payton Robinette and Maggie Leavell lost in first round action.
Sunday’s flight one championship match is slated to begin at 7:30 am C, with second round singles commencing around 8:00 am CT. With inclement weather being an issue in South Carolina all times are subject to change.
