All-American Again

Gordon Sargent named Division I PING first-team All-America Wednesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Capping a season that saw him emerge as the program’s all-time individual win leader while also competing at the Masters Tournament, Gordon Sargent became the first two-time GCAA first-team All-American in Vanderbilt men’s golf history Wednesday with the announcement of the organization’s 2022-23 honorees.

The sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama, was one of 11 student-athletes recognized as Division I PING first-team All-Americans. In all, Sargent is one of nine Commodores to earn first-team All-America honors from the GCAA since 2003.

He finished the season with a 68.5 scoring average after shooting par or better in 30 of 35 rounds. Sargent was the medalist at the East Lake Cup, John Hayt Invitational and Mason Rudolph Championship while recording top-10 results at 11 of 12 tournaments to be named a finalist for the Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Haskins Awards presented by different organizations to the national player of the year.

Sargent is currently ranked first in both the Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin individual ratings, also standing second in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and third in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com ratings. He is set to once again represent the United States at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup, slated to be contested June 8-10 at the Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

Other honors Sargent has claimed this season include being named first-team all-region, the SEC Player of the Year and first-team all-conference, and earning the league player-of-the-week award on five different occasions.

His efforts helped the Commodores advance to the NCAA Championships for the ninth consecutive year while picking up six team titles this season.
