NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 14 Vanderbilt jumped out to an early lead in doubles, but No. 27 Texas A&M came back in singles to beat the Commodores 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Currey Tennis Center.
Needing a comeback in doubles, Anessa Lee and Christina Rosca evened doubles at one win apiece with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 after the Aggies’ No. 1 duo ranked No. 39 in the country took a 6-1 win. Coming down to Emma Kurtz and Marcella Cruz on No. 2, the pair answered a 4-2 deficit to battle back and force a tiebreaker, ultimately winning the match 7-6 (4) to secure the Dores an early 1-0 lead.
In singles, Texas A&M answered Vanderbilt’s doubles triumph with a trio of straight-set wins on Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Coming down the stretch, Lee on No. 4 and Meyer on No. 6 were in tight battles deep into third sets, but the Aggies took the 4-1 decision by way of Renee McBryde’s 7-6 (7), 6-3 win on No. 5.
Lee’s match went unfinished with the freshman tied 1-6, 6-3, 5-5 and Meyer led in the third but ultimately finished 6-0, 4-6, 6-5.
Vanderbilt will host its final two scheduled home matches of the 2021 season next weekend when it welcomes Tennessee and Georgia to Currey Tennis Center on Friday and Sunday, respectively. First serve against the Volunteers is set for 3 p.m. with Sunday against the Bulldogs slated for 1 p.m.
