NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For the second time in exactly 21 days, Vanderbilt women’s tennis will face No. 4 Texas A&M on Friday in a rematch of their opening round tilt at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
The Commodores host the Aggies for the second consecutive season after the black and gold came out on top 5-2 last year. Vanderbilt (11-2, 1-0 SEC) enters Friday fresh off a 6-1 victory against Missouri in its SEC opener. It was the sixth straight win for the Dores, who suffered their first loss of the season to Texas A&M (9-2, 1-0 SEC) on Feb. 6. Vandy trails in the all-time series with the Aggies 13-6.
Three Dores are on an active winning streak of five matches or more in singles play; No. 42 ranked senior Bridget Stammel and freshman Erin Pearce have notched six consecutive victories while sophomore Sophia Webster won her fifth in a row against the Tigers. Stammel and Pearce both lead the team in singles wins with 10 apiece. In doubles, the No. 10 duo of Stammel and junior Valeria Ray remain unbeaten in dual match play. The pair have secured nine straight to pace Vanderbilt in doubles wins.
Texas A&M picked up their ninth win of the season in 4-3 fashion over Texas, who the Commodores play on Sunday. The Aggies’ two losses both have come to teams currently ranked in the top 10: No. 2 Ohio State and No. 10 Pepperdine. A&M was handed the only defeat it has suffered in its last 24 regular season SEC matches by Vanderbilt last year, going 23-1 in that span. Three Aggies currently sit in the ITA individual rankings, led by Lucciana Perez at No. 5. Mia Kupres sits at No. 35 and Daria Smettanikov comes in at No. 125. Perez and Kupres make up the No. 15 ranked doubles pairing.
Friday’s match kicks off alumni weekend for the Commodores; events will take place throughout the weekend, concluding with Sunday’s match against No. 16 Texas. This includes an alumni hit around and dinner at FirstBank Stadium’s Anchor Down Club on Saturday. More information on women’s tennis alumni weekend can be found here.
