Dores fall short in SEC opener

NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt swim team hosted its second home meet of the season Saturday against SEC opponent and No. 15-ranked Missouri.

Opening up the meet with the 200-yard medley relay, the Commodore A relay raced a second-place finish with a time of 1:44.97. The podium finish was earned by Johanna Goldblatt, Hannah Hunt, Tonner DeBeer and Abby Burke.

Today’s matchup between two SEC teams was a strong test for new Commodore freshmen who rose to the challenge earning multiple top-three finishes.

Earning her second podium finish of the day, freshman Burke placed third in the 200 Y freestyle, placing before two Missouri swimmers with a time of 1:53.44.

Burke took the pool again competing in the 100 Y freestyle with a final time of 52.32 earning her third podium victory of the day.

Earning another top-three finish, freshman Lizzy Colwell swam a swift 1:06.39 100 Y breaststroke followed by sophomore Brooke Ellis racing a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:08.61 in the 200 Y butterfly.

Standout freshman Tonner DeBeer achieved multiple top-three finishes in today’s meet, two of them coming from relay victories competing in Vanderbilt’s A relay squad. Individually, DeBeer swam a quick 23.79 in the 50 Y freestyle earning the freshman a second-place finish as well as another second-place finish in the 100 Y butterfly (55.90).

“Tonner really had a good weekend. She proved that she is going to be somebody that’s going to be very impactful for this team as the season goes along,” said head coach Jeremy Organ.

The Dores fell short in their SEC opener with a final score of 176-81. Despite the score, Organ is proud of the way his team opened up SEC play and is looking forward to the upcoming season.

“Overall, I’m really happy with the weekend as a whole. Day two getting our first taste of the SEC against No. 15-ranked Mizzou is a good challenge for us and will really help set the tone and get us prepared to compete at that level the rest of this year,” said Organ.

The Dores take on their third match of the season next Saturday at noon against Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
