Commodores Slip to Texas A&M and Houston

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Vanderbilt swimming team competed in its first double-dual meet of the 2019 season, falling short to host Texas A&M, 162-91, and Houston, 199-76.
 
Top open the meet, the Commodores placed sixth in­­ the 400-yard medley relay with Johanna Goldblatt, Hannah Hunt, Tonner Debeer and Abby Burke touching in 3:52.18. 
 
Leading into the distance events, Lara Hernandez-Tome, fresh off a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle against Marshall, swam a 10:21.85 to earn the sophomore a fourth-place showing against the Aggies and Cougars.
 
Racking up another fourth-place victory for the Commodores, freshman Tonner Debeer swam the 50-yard freestyle in 23.87 with only milliseconds separating the top-four swimmers.  
 
Competing in the 100-yard freestyle, the Commodores secured places sixth through ninth with Kaley Buchanan leading the Dores in 53.78.
 
Debeer earned another top-10 finish, competing in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.67, followed by sophomore Lauren Thomas, who placed seventh in the event with a 2:07.57.
 
Continuing a strong run for the Dores, freshman Lizzy Colwell placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:21.21, followed by Hannah Hunt, who was sixth in 2:22.94. 
 
Freshman Abby Burke, just shy of a podium finish, placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle leading the Commodores in the event in 5:06.31 followed by distance swimmer, Hernandez-Tome earning seventh place racing 5:10.59.
 
Freshman Debeer earned the Commodores first podium finish of the meet placing second in the 100-yard butterfly over Houston and Texas A&M touching in 55.65. 
 
Concluding individual events for the Dores, Burke placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley swimming a 2:08.40 following by Thomas and Colwell wrapping up the event finishing seventh and eighth in 2:10.40 and 2:10.51 respectively. 
 
Finishing the meet strong, the Dores earned third place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Buchanan, Paige Hamilton, Reagan Roob and Goldblatt finishing in 1:38.69.
 
The Commodores look to bounce back this Saturday as they host Little Rock at the Centennial Sportsplex. 
 
The Dores will honor their four seniors; Mary Beckwith, Eunsol Chon, Madison Eaker and Johanna Goldblatt prior to Saturday’s meet at 10:45 a.m. CT.
