Commodores conquer Campbell in season opener

NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt swim team took a home win against the Campbell Fighting Camels Friday to kick off the 2018 season. The Commodores won by a 198-166 margin at the Centennial Sportsplex.

In a relay-style meet, the Dores secured first-place victories in seven out of 10 events with four freshmen receiving their first wins as Commodores. Freshmen Abigail Burke, Lizzy Colwell, Tonner DeBeer and Lauren Thomas all earned wins swimming in the Vanderbilt A relays of their respective events.

In a dominant start, Vandy A relay Selah Peacock, Namilla Sanchez and Lara Hernandez-Tome owned the pool in the 3×300 yard freestyle relay placing first with a time of 9:05.57.

Success continued to follow the Dores as they earned three consecutive first-place finishes in the 3×50 yard butterfly (1:18.56), 3×50 yard backstroke relay (1:18.92) and the 3×50 yard breaststroke relay (1:31.44) conquering wins for seniors Mary Beckwith, Johanna Goldblatt and Madison Eaker.

In the remaining events, Vanderbilt A and B relays earned second and third place finishes in three events, the 500-yard freestyle relay (4:37.15, 4:48.20), the 400-yard medley relay (3:55.56, 3:56.63) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:35.63, 3:42.38).

Vanderbilt head coach Jeremy Organ was very proud of the way his team kicked off the season through the relay-style meet.

“We had a lot of fun today,” Organ said. “It was a different order with the relays and that’s really something kids don’t get to do that often so it was fun to be involved in a different way of racing. I saw a lot of really good things, also a lot of things we need to do a lot better. I’m really looking forward to racing tomorrow, an SEC opponent with Mizzou in town. It’s a very good team coming in so that will give us our first SEC test which is something we are really excited about.”

The Dores kick off their first SEC match of the season taking on Missouri on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT.
