Commodores Fall in Double Overtime

SAN DIEGO – Vanderbilt’s perfect start to 2019 ended as it fell to San Diego State on the road in double overtime, 15-14, Friday night at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
 
The Commodores (5-1) held the Aztecs scoreless for nine straight minutes before finally surrendering the game-winning goal in the second overtime period.
 
It was a back and forth game throughout, with the largest lead belonging to the Aztecs at the 5-2 mark just eight minutes into the game.
 
Gabby Fornia tied a career-high with three goals with her third goal tying the game in the final two minutes at 14-14 to end up sending the game to overtime.
 
Hadley Brown also secured a hat trick with her best scoring performance of the season. Brown scored all of her goals in the first half, with her third goal coming off an assist from Fornia, who currently leads the team with 11 assists.
 
Julie Blaze and Gwyn Devin each had another multi-goal game for the Commodores as both poured in two apiece.
 
Blaze tied for a team-high with four draw controls with freshman Bri Gross, who also added a goal. Gross has scored in five of her six collegiate games to start her career.
 
Vanderbilt led the game in several categories over San Diego State, including draw controls (17-16), shots on goal (26-22) and caused turnovers (17-9).
 
The Commodores came into the game ranked third in the country in caused turnovers per game, and multiple Commodores recorded more than one caused turnover. Melanie Becker, Gross, Melanie Hawkins and Callie Sundin caused two turnovers with Halle Regan causing a game-high three.
 
Vanderbilt returns home after a four-game road trip on Wednesday to take on New Hampshire at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex set for 3 p.m. CT.
