Commodores Take on Lady Paladins Tuesday

The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team hosts Furman on Tuesday, Aug. 17, in a scrimmage at the Vanderbilt Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m.

The Commodores welcome 10 newcomers to a team that advanced to the SEC Tournament last season. Seniors Jessica Fear and Molly Wilson lead the way for Vanderbilt.

“I have been extremely pleased with our co-captains, Jessica Fear and Molly Wilson,” VU Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill said.  “Their commitment to this team and program is not only admirable but inspirational for our younger players.  They provide our team with fantastic leadership, a winning mentality and a true passion for Vanderbilt Soccer.  I am positive that with their leadership, we will achieve our goals this season.”

Furman has nine returning starters from a team that finished 15-5-2 last season and claimed the Southern Conference regular season title in 2003.

“This will be a challenge for us,” Coveleskie Hill added.  “Furman is a very talented team with some fantastic individual players.  They will provide a great challenge for our team and will give us an opportunity to see how we will work as a unit.”

Furman returns five players who garnered first team All-SoCon honors a year ago, including April Raymer, Andie Hinshaw, Nicky Darling, Kat Kelley and 2003 SoCon Player-of-the-Year Andre’a Morrison.

The Commodores, who have been in two-a-days since Thursday, begin the regular season with a home-opener against Wake Forest Aug. 27 (Friday) at 7 pm.  Seven of VU’s opponents played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

“I have been very pleased with the beginning of our preseason training,” Coveleskie Hill added.  “Our team has pushed through some difficult practice sessions in preparation for a very competitive season.  This is a very special team.  There are not too many years that a team has the opportunity to mix an equal number of returnees with the freshmen.”

The Commodores consist of two seniors, four juniors, six sophomores and nine freshmen.
