ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Vanderbilt junior Wells Williams was named the 2024-25 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s coaches on Friday for his work in the classroom and on the course this season.
Williams becomes the fourth Commodore to win the award since it was established in 2004. He joins Ryan Haselden (2010-11), Theo Humphrey (2017-18) and Cole Sherwood (2023-24) as the only Vanderbilt men’s golfers to win the award.
The West Point, Mississippi, native was a 2024 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, as well as the 2023 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, in each of his first two seasons with the Commodores. Williams, an Anthropology major at Vanderbilt, holds a cumulative GPA of 3.84.
“I’m super proud of Wells,” said Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “He does a great job both in the classroom and on the course, and he cares about that. We’re thankful that the coaches in this league recognize what our student-athletes do. Our program takes a lot of pride in being excellent in everything we do.”
Coming into this week’s SEC Championship, Williams held a season scoring average of 70.41 through a team-high 27 rounds. The junior has captured a team-best two individual titles this season, both coming during the spring. He first won the 2025 Southwestern Invitational with a three-round total of 5-under 208, then he closed out the regular season by winning the 2025 Mason Rudolph Championship with a score of 15-under 198.
The junior’s 54-hole score of 198 at the Mason Rudolph is tied for the fifth-lowest three-round total in program history. Additionally, his 15-under vs. par is also tied for the fifth-lowest 54-hole vs. par score ever posted by a Commodore. Williams’ season-low 18-hole score of 8-under 63 set in Round 1 of the Mason Rudolph tied him for the fifth-lowest single-round total in program history.
