Forward Cheyna Williams has been named to the 2012 Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team, as the league announced its annual women’s soccer awards this week.

Awards were voted on by the league’s 14 coaches in advance of this week’s SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala. Williams, a native of Hampton, Ga., was the Commodores’ leader in goals, assists and points this season.

“This is a great honor for Cheyna,” VU Head Coach Derek Greene said. “Considering that she suffered an injury and really only participated fully in seven of our league games. it is a testament to the impact that she made when she was healthy.”

Williams started the first 15 contests of the season, netting six goals and adding six assists. She scored twice in VU’s 3-2 overtime win at Arkansas on Oct. 5, but would leave the following game at LSU due to injury.

The 5’7″ Williams made an impact early this season, scoring four goals in Vanderbilt’s first seven games. She also created opportunities for teammates, passing out a pair of assists in VU’s 2-0 victory at MTSU in August. Williams ranked in the SEC’s Top 10 in both assists and points per game.

“Our staff felt like Cheyna was having an SEC Freshman of the Year-caliber season before her injury,” Greene added. “We hope she uses this as motivation to work hard as we see even brighter things in her future.”
