Amy Richards Burgess
Lacrosse – 1996-97
Former Commodore lacrosse player Amy Richards Burgess graduated from Vanderbilt in 1997. She was a member of Vanderbilt’s first lacrosse team in 1996 and was also a former captain.
VUCommodores.com recently caught up with Burgess, who lives in Columbus, Ohio, and has worked at Ohio State University for more than 10 years.VUCommodores.com: Do you still follow Vanderbilt’s lacrosse program from afar?
Amy Richards Burgess: Not as closely as I would like, but yes, from time-to-time on the website or alumni publications.
Is it exciting to see how far the program has come since when you were in school?
Absolutely. The program had very humble beginnings so to see them sustain success is very gratifying. Vanderbilt was a pioneer in adding the sport when they did. I am grateful for having been a part of building the program and to have had the opportunity to play the sport I love at the highest level.
What is your current role with Ohio State and how long have you been at the university?
I have been at the university for more than 10 years. Since 2001 I have worked in the department of athletics as a graduate assistant, director of Buckeye sports camps and for the past six years as director of internal operations for the football program.
In April, I started a new position as special assistant to the senior vice president in administration and planning. My new position is outside of athletics, but still with Ohio State and deals with planning and coordination as it relates to the physical environment on campus.
Did you have much involvement with Ohio State’s lacrosse program?
Not in the day-to-day. I did serve on the selection committee that hired Ohio State’s Head WLAX Coach Alexis Venechanos in 2010 and as director of Buckeye sports camps helped to run their summer camp.
Do you ever make it back to Vanderbilt’s campus and Nashville?
Now that I do not have to work on football Saturdays, I hope to make it back to Nashville for my 15-year (yikes!) reunion this fall. I have not been back to Nashville or Vanderbilt since my younger brother graduated in 2003.
Have you started a family in Columbus?
I have been married to Ryan Burgess for 12 years (June) and we have a six-year old daughter, Elizabeth.
