The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in a tie for sixth place with Purdue after the first day of play at the LSU Tiger/Wave Classic in New Orleans with a team score of 303. Freshman Lauren Stratton led the way for the Commodores with an even-par, 72, which is good for a tie for fourth at the event.

The Commodores are 10 strokes behind the leader, Alabama, after the first round. The Crimson Tide shot a five-over par, 293, at the par-72, 6,132-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, the former host of a PGA Tour event. Host LSU is one stroke back with a score of 294.

Stratton, who is tied with four other golfers for fourth with an even-par, 72, is two strokes back of the two individual leaders, Brooke Pancake of Alabama and Tessa Teachman of LSU, who each fired a two-under, 70, on Friday.

VU’s other counting scores on Friday came from Marina Alex, who is tied for 26th with a 75, Megan Grehan, who fired a 77 (T-47), and Anna Leigh Keith, who shot a 79 (T-72). Brooke Goodwin closed out the Vanderbilt scores with a first-round 82 (T-104).

“We got a huge effort from Lauren Stratton today, and it’s great to see her developing into our number two player,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “It was very uncharacteristic for Marina (Alex) out there. She had some bad luck today.

“The wind today was gusting up to 20 miles per hour, and English Turn is a championship golf course, which means there is not a lot of room for error with bad shots,” continued Allen. “But, I was really impressed with our composure. They really handled the adversity well after making some big numbers. This is a group that can go low at any time, and I know that they will bounce back tomorrow with a great effort.”

The second round continues on Saturday.
