The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in 11th place after day two with a team total of 613 (306-307) at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Freshman Marina Alex leads the Vanderbilt contingent with a two-round total of 152, after a second-round score of 75.
Alex and sophomore Megan Grehan each fired a second-round 75 Saturday at the ASU Karsten Golf Course to lead Vanderbilt. Alex is in a tie for 29th after two days of play, and junior Brooke Goodwin is next for the Commodores with a score of 153 (75-78). Grehan moved up to a tie for 47th with a total of 155 (80-75), and freshman Andrea Messer is also at 155 (76-79) with Grehan. Senior Jacqui Concolino is in a tie for 65th and has a total of 158 (78-80) after Saturday’s play.
The Commodores are three strokes behind Stanford for 10th place with a 613. Host Arizona State leads the tournament at 585 (294-291), five strokes better than Purdue, who is in second place with a 590 (293-297). Southern Cal’s Lizette Salas leads all individuals with a five-under par 139, two strokes ahead of Purdue’s Maria Hernandez.
“I keep telling myself and our team that we’re better than the scoreboard,” said Vanderbilt coach Greg Allen. “We had it going for a little while, but we had a couple of girls not playing well, especially down the stretch. We’re just so much closer than the number shows on the scoreboard. We just can’t get any momentum going. There were tough conditions today, but that is no excuse. We need to get it figured out soon, and I’m super confident that we will. Hopefully we’ll get a good round going tomorrow.”
The final round concludes on Sunday.
