The Vanderbilt women’s golf team finished the one-day, 36-hole Ladies Midwest Shootout in second place after posting a team total of 615 (307-308) at the tournament hosted by Purdue University.
Junior Brooke Goodwin led the Commodores with a seven-over par, 151 (73-78), while sophomore Megan Grehan finished the tournament in seventh (77-76=153), and freshman Marina Alex ended the tournament in a tie for 10th at 155 (78-77).
“We were in the hunt and we did a lot of good things,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Brooke’s 73 in the morning was a good score with some very tough, cold conditions.
“It was a good test before we go to SEC’s next weekend. We won’t see tougher conditions next week, and we hit some great golf shots today despite those conditions. It’s good for our confidence. It’s what we wanted heading into the SEC Championships.”
The Commodores’ other two competitors, freshman Andrea Messer and senior Jacqui Concolino, both finished in the top 16 Saturday. Messer finished with a 158 (81-77), which tied for 12th, and Concolino ended the day in a tie for 16th with a 160 (79-81).
Kent State won the tournament with a 610 (302-308), five strokes better than the Commodores. Purdue’s Maude Aimee Leblanc claimed medalist honors with a 147 (76-71).
Vanderbilt ends their regular season April 17-19 at the Blythewood Golf Club outside of Columbia, S.C.
