ATLANTA – Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis team wrapped up the second day of competition at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday.
After Charlie Jones and Bryant Salcedo both fell in the first round of the “A” singles bracket Friday, both players ripped through the consolation bracket with a pair of wins Saturday and will square off against each other Sunday. The winner will play in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Alex DiValerio continued his solid play by advancing to the semifinals of the “B” singles bracket with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Auburn’s Michel Monteiao. Unfortunately, DiValerio was upended before he could reach the final by Clemson’s Wesley Moran in a hard-fought, 4-6, 6-0 7-6(6) match.
After winning his opening match in the “A” singles bracket on Friday, James Moye fell to Auburn’s Lukas Marsoun, 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16 Saturday. Moye was then eliminated in the second round of the consolation bracket.
In doubles play, Adam Baker’s and Alex Zotov’s run through the “A” bracket came to an end when Georgia Tech’s duo of Miguel Mugunza and Ryan Smith downed them, 8-3.
In the doubles “B” bracket DiValerio and Moye lost a close match to UNCW’s duo of Nikolov and Wethenell, 9-8(5) in the semifinals.
