VU upsets No. 22 Tulane, 4-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 34th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team upset No. 22 Tulane with a 4-1 win at home Sunday morning.

The Commodores started the match by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 advantage.

Vanderbilt capitalized on court two with a 6-4 win, thanks to Panu Virtanen and Lachlan McPhee taking down No. 50 Tyler Schick and Luis Erlenbusch. Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe secured the doubles point with an exciting tie-breaker win over Constantin Schmitz and Ewan Moore, 7-6(6). Baker Newman and Daniel Valent we’re tied, 7-all, on court three at the conclusion of doubles.

VU opened singles play with first-set advantages on all six courts.

George Harwell defeated Tulane’s Tim Ruetzel 7-5, 6-3 for Vandy’s first singles victory of the day. Harwell rebounded from this first loss of the dual season on Friday against Alabama to improve to 10-1 on the season.

The Green Wave answered with a big win on court one, where No. 24 Constantin Schmitz took on Vandy’s No. 50 Cameron Kinger. Schmitz earned the point for Tulane after a competitive 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 battle.

Vanderbilt earned a third point after Billy Rowe defeated No. 95 Tyler Schick 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 on court four. The Dores clinched the match on court five for the 4-1 victory. Maxwell Freeman defeated sophomore Luis Erlenbusch 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to give Vanderbilt its seventh-straight victory and 11th overall.

At the clinch, Newman was in control on court three, 5-0 in the third set, while Valent led 3-2 on court two.

Vanderbilt will remain at home this week as it takes on Southeastern Conference opponents Ole Miss at 4:00 p.m. CT on Friday and Arkansas at noon on Sunday.
