NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swimming and diving team closes out its regular season on Saturday as it travels to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech and Emory in a double dual meet.
“We’re looking to keep progressing,” Vanderbilt head swimming coach Jeremy Organ said. “This will give us one last look at the girls in some events. We’ll also start preparing for the SEC’s, which come up in a few weeks.”
The Commodores (0-8 in dual meets) are coming off a loss at the hands of the Arkansas Lady `Backs last weekend. Freshman Leigh-Ann Axt continued her stellar freshman season as she won her 13th individual race of the season in the 200-yard freestyle. She also recorded a runner-up finish in the 200-yard butterfly. Fellow freshman Jennifer Molchan notched a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.
Georgia Tech enters the meet with a 4-5 record. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 177.5-84.5 loss to Virginia Tech last weekend. Senior Elizabeth Stowe and freshman Christine Chuang each won two events for Georgia Tech in the loss to the Hokies.
“They have some real good swimmers,” Organ said. “It’s senior day there so they will be ready to go. We’ll have to have our best day and hopefully compete real well.”
Emory, currently ranked second in the country, is one of the top swim programs in NCAA Division III. The Eagles won the national championship in 2005 and have earned seven top-four national finishes since 2001. Emory enters the weekend meet with a 6-1 record. The Eagles are led by freshman Morgan Klinzing who won two races in Emory’s last meet against Wingate University. She also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle.
“They have a real strong program,” Organ said. “They always finish in the top three at nationals. They’ll be coming in looking forward to competing against a pair of Division I swim teams so we have to be prepared and ready to compete.”
Action at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, host facility for all the swimming, diving and synchronized swimming events at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, commences at 11 a.m. (CST).
