DURHAM, N.H. —  The Vanderbilt lacrosse team dropped an 8-6 decision on the road at New Hampshire Friday at Memorial Field.

Both team were scoreless until the 10th minute of the game, when VU junior captain Kate Hickman opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 9:04. The Wildcats would tally twice in the 15th minute, taking a 2-1 lead at 14:59 on a goal by Kristin Blanchette.

Hickman brought the game back to even in the 20th minute, scoring off an assist from sophomore Kendall Thrift. But a fast-break goal by Laura Dosdall three minutes later gave UNH back the lead at 3-2 and caused Vanderbilt to take a timeout.

At the 29:22 mark of the half, the Wildcats would add another goal to take a 4-2 lead into the break. Vanderbilt took only six shots in the first half, with UNH goalie Stacey Plati making one save. Senior Ashley Bastinelli made seven first-half saves for the Commodores, who allowed a total of 14 New Hampshire shots in the first 30 minutes.

The Wildcats struck first in the second half, when Katie Leland notched her second of the game in the 33rd minute. Off the ensuing draw, only 12 seconds later, New Hampshire’s Jess Burnap went directly to goal and gave the Wildcats a 6-2 lead. Seven minutes later, the lead expanded to 7-2 on Moira Talbot’s second goal for UNH.

Less than a minute later, the Commodores answered with their first goal of second half as Thrift found Hickman for her third goal of the game. In the 47th minute, freshman Meredith St. Lawrence earned her first collegiate assist, finding classmate Margie Curran open in front of the net to bring the Commodores within three goals at 7-4.

Curran tallied her second of the game at 55:14 off an assist from sophomore Jennifer Tapscott to bring Vanderbilt within two. The Dores would control the next draw, but suffer a turnover which New Hampshire converted into a goal with only 3:11 remaining in the game.

At 58:44 Hickman tallied her fourth goal of the game off an from Curran. A number of turnovers in the final minutes had the ball moving up and down the field. Vanderbilt’s comeback fell just short, as late shots were saved by UNH’s keeper, the crossbar and the left post to secure the 8-6 victory for the Wildcats.

Freshman Sasha Cielak came up with four ground balls and three draw controls for the Commodores. Curran also controlled three draws, while Bastinelli came out of the goal to pick up five ground balls.
