VU Lacrosse Faces Princeton In NCAA Final Four 5-20-04

5/20/2004

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team will face top-ranked Princeton in the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament at Princeton Stadium Friday. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Eastern, and will be followed by a second semifinal featuring Virginia and Georgetown.

The Commodores are making their first appearance in the Final Four. In only the ninth year of the program’s varsity status, Vanderbilt is involved in its second NCAA Tournament.

Prior to Friday’s match, Vanderbilt and Princeton have never faced each other. In the first two rounds of the tournament, the Commodores defeated Loyola (5-4) and James Madison (10-4) in the inaugural meetings with those two schools.

Vanderbilt (12-5) has nine seniors, including 2004 American Lacrosse Conference Player of the Year Michelle Allen, who are looking to extend their final season as Commodores, the best season in school history.

In the Commodores first two tournament games, junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli, playing behind a tough VU defense, allowed Loyola and James Madison only four goals per game — more than seven goals below their season average. The Dores will need another strong defensive effort on Friday, as they face the nation’s most prolific offense.
