Scouting The Commodores
The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team (6-3) returns home for its second game in three days to host Hartford. Christina Foggie returned to action after a two-game layoff (foot) to lead the Commodores with 18 points in a 77-67 at Western Kentucky on Tuesday night. A Preseason First Team All-SEC selection, Foggie leads the Commodores in scoring at 16.0 ppg. Tiffany Clarke is the next leading scorer for Vanderbilt, posting 14.3 per game while grabbing 7.0 rebounds per outing. Clarke ranks in the top 10 in the conference in scoring (9th), rebounding (10th) and field goal percentage (2nd at .598). Third on the team in scoring is Jasmine Lister, who had a double-double in the win over the Lady Toppers, scoring 13 and dishing out 11 assists. Lister now leads the league in assists at 5.4 per game. Senior Elan Brown is also a major contributor for the Commodores, averaging 6.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while leading Vanderbilt in steals (17). The Commodores have won three-straight contests and have claimed victory in all four home games this season.
Scouting The Hawks
Hartford travels to Nashville with a 6-1 record, having last played on December 1, a 66-39 win over Providence College. Head Coach Jennifer Rizzotti’s team is very balanced, with four players averaging between eight and 11 points per game. Nikkia Smith leads the way at 11.0 points per game, while grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game off the bench. Amber Bepko is next at 10.4 points per outing, followed by Ruthanne Doherty (8.9 ppg) and Daphne Elliott (8.4 ppg). Christie Michals led the way in the win over the Friars, scoring 13 points. This will be Hartford’s only trip outside New England or New York this season.
The Series – Vanderbilt vs. Hartford
Vanderbilt follows-up its most common non-conference opponent in program history (Western Kentucky) with a program it has never met before in Hartford. The Commodores have only played America East teams on seven occasions and are 6-1 against the league (2-1 vs. Boston University, 1-0 against Maine, 3-0 against Vermont). The most recent meeting against an America East foe was a 65-54 win over the Catamounts in 2003-04.
On Deck – Oklahoma
Vanderbilt will take a 10-day layoff for final exams before its next game, a December 16 contest at No. 13/12 Oklahoma. That game is set for 2:00 p.m. CT in Norman, Okla.
Clarke On The Brink
Senior forward Tiffany Clarke is on the verge of becoming the 34th 1,000-point scorer in Vanderbilt history. Clarke is currently at 995 points entering Thursday night’s showdown with Hartford. She will look to become the first player to reach the milestone since Jence Rhoads in 2010-11 (Hannah Tuomi also eclipsed 1,000 points that season. As Clarke looks to move up the all-time scoring list, the next player in her sights is Shelley Jarrard, who scored 1,003 points from 1990-93.
