Sophomore Kendall Martindale carded a final total of 214 (70-73-71) at the Stanford Invitational to finish eighth individually, her third top ten performance of the season, to lead the Commodores to a fifth-place finish as a team at the event, the team’s third top five finish of the season.
Martindale shot an even-par, 71, in her final round at the Stanford Golf Course on Sunday. Senior Lauren Stratton ended the tournament with a final score of 216 (71-71-74), which placed her in a tie for 12th, junior Rene Sobolewski finished in a tie for 26th with a 219 (72-74-73), and freshman Jenny Hahn fired a 224 (75-73-76) to place in a tie for 48th. Sophomore Irina Gabasa withdrew from play on Sunday, and finished 89th.
“It’s frustrating to know that we were leading with about 25 holes left and we stumbled to a 5th place finish,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I’m proud of Kendall for another top 10 finish and Rene really came back from a poor performance in Athens. But overall, we need to finish a round. All three days we had it going but made very untimely bogeys. I do like the makeup of this team and do believe that when we play to our abilities, we can beat anybody.”
Southern Cal claimed the tournament with a final total of 857, four strokes better than second-place Washington. The Trojans’ Kyung Kim won medalist honors with a 206 (72-66-68).
The Commodores finished their fall season at the Stanford Invitational, and return to the course at the Central District Invitational February 18 and 19in Parrish, Fla.
