NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swim team hosted its second meet of the season Saturday afternoon, this time taking on the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. While Commodore fans enjoyed several close races, VU fell 165-97.
The Dores began strong taking nine podium finishes in seven events. Summer Brown earned the first first place finish of the day, swimming a 1:52.26 in the 200 freestyle. Fellow sophomores, Kara Lucenti and Breanna Sapienza followed with top finishes in the 100 breast and 200 fly respectively.
By the first break the Commodores only trailed the Gamecocks by a mere 25 points, a deficit easily surmountable as some of Vanderbilt’s best events were still ahead.
Following the break, the Dores had another powerful showing by Brown, as the Kokomo, Ind. Native earned second place and four points in the 100 free, swimming a 53.62.
Lucenti earned nine points for the team, taking first place in the 200 breast at a time od 2:16.91, defeating SC’s Barksdale by almost 3.5 seconds.
Vanderbilt’s next podium finishes were two events later, as Sapienza and Kayla Moran took first (55.69) and second place (56.98) in the 100 fly.
In the last individual race of the morning, Lucenti took second in the 200 IM at a time of 2:06.87.Vandy capped the meet taking second place in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:33.74.
The Commodores’ final home meet of the season will take place at Ensworth School on Jan. 30th at 11:00 am. Senior day festivities honoring Hannah Martin will begin at 10:45.
