Vanderbilt’s Department of Athletics is putting part of its marketing effort on wheels.

Beginning Monday, August 18 Vanderbilt cheerleaders and mascot Mr. Commodore will be traveling throughout the Nashville area in a decorated vehicle six days a week promoting the football and basketball seasons. The Vandy Van is expected to be active every afternoon, six days a week, until the end of September.

“This is another way for us to reach out into the Nashville community to promote the Commodores and college athletics,” says Owen Shull, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Promotions. “Members of our cheer squad will take turns travelingto all corners of the city, stopping at malls and other high traffic areas to distribute schedule cards, posters and other promotional material. When this program is complete, we expect to have logged over 200 hours promoting our teams on a very grass roots level.”

One of the first major appearances for the Vandy Van program will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on August 23 at the Mall of Green Hills.

Shull said that area business owners and Commodore fans can request an appearance of the Vandy Van through a link on the Commodores’ web site, vucommodores.com or by calling Meredith Schakel at 343-5463.
