NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s swim team hosted its first dual meet of the season at the Nashville Centennial Sportsplex, falling to the University of Arkansas 194-43 to start the season. The Commodores (0-2) set three season-high marks against the Razorbacks (3-0).
“I thought it was a good meet,” Coach Organ said. “Arkansas swam very well today and it was some tough competition. I think we saw some people step up and have some good races. A lot of the girls improved over last week and that’s what we wanted to see.”
The meet kicked off with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay behind the team of Chelsea Morey, Chloe Ott, Jessica Eccher and Melissa Roberts. The 1:49.50 time was only one second off of first place. The team of Laura Furr, Laura Dillon, Sarah Lynch and Betsy Galenti finished in fifth with a time of 1:53.55.
“The relay team performed pretty well,” Freshman Melissa Roberts said. “I thought we were going to win at the end but they pulled it out. I was pretty happy with how the performance turned out though.”
Sophomore Amy Salce finished third on her way to setting the season-best mark in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:08.41. Salce also set the season-best mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.41.
Once again, the freshmen class had a strong showing with Michelle Williamson setting the season high mark in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:41.73. Chloe Ott took the only individual second-place finish of the day, swimming the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:25.88. Margaux Georgiadis placed third in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.42.
Co-Captain Laura Dillon finished fourth (2:13.76) in the 200-yard IM while Chelsea Morey finished fifth with a time of 2:15.88. Dillon also finished fourth in the 200-yart butterfly.
The Commodores finished up with the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing second and third. Melissa Roberts, Jess Eccher, Sarah Lynch, and Jennifer Molchan made up the second place team. The third place team consisted of Amy Salce, Laura Furr, Betsy Galenti and Rose Cornelson.
The Vanderbilt women’s swim team returns to the pool tomorrow at noon to face off against South Carolina and Western Kentucky in the Centennial Sportsplex. Live stats can be viewed at www.swimnac.com/realtime/.
