KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – On the first day of competition in the 2017 SEC Championship, the Commodores had relay teams swim in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Johanna Goldblatt, Kara Lucenti, Breanna Sapienza, and Kayla Moran looked to repeat the start of the 2016 SEC Championship when they broke the school record in the 200 medley. The team finished with a time of 1:39.63, which would have broken the school record, but after video review, they were one of four teams disqualified for an early exchange.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of Paige Hamilton, Carrie Bencic, Selah Peacock, and Summer Brown finished with a time of 7:25.79. Following the race, there was another video review and the ‘Dores got disqualified for an early exchange.

“Defintley some mixed emotions after day one,” said head coach Jeremy Organ. “I thought the girls had some great swims in both relays but it came down to 0.01 and 0.09 seconds which was the difference in the early exchanges. Looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow.”

Day two will start tomorrow morning at 10 am ET with prelim races in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM and 50-yard freestyle. Later in the day, the finals races in those three events along with 200-yard freestyle relay and women’s 1-meter dive will begin at 6 pm ET.
